The ASUS U31SD-A1 is an attractive 13-inch laptop with decent overall performance, good graphics power, and superb battery life. Overall, we prefer the Acer Aspire Timeline 3830TG, which offers even more graphics oomph and a faster Core i5 processor for the same price. The caveat with the Acer is that you have to give up about 2.5 hours of unplugged time. If you want all-day endurance along with the ability to game between classes or meetings, the U31SD-A1 is a fine choice.

It is a lightweight laptop that comes jam packed with a 2.1GHz Intel Core i3-2310M processor and a 1GB nVidia GeForce GT520M GPU. Measuring 12.9-inch x 9.1-inch x 1.12-inch and weighing 4.2 pounds, this laptop has a large island-style keyboard with generous spacing between the keys, a Synaptics touchpad that supports multitouch gestures such as pinch-to-zoom and two-finger rotation, two USB 2.0 ports, a 5-in-1 card reader, HDMI, VGA, and Ethernet. When you are just surfing the web, the notebook automatically switches to Intel’s integrated graphics, enabling the battery to provide up to 9-hour of operation time.

According to a battery life test published by Notebook Review in their full review of the U31SD the laptop is capable of lasting through 11 hours and 5 minutes of web browsing with display brightness at 70% and Wi-Fi turned on. That is an awesome result and the U31SD is able to do that thanks to the 8-cell (5600mAh) lithium-ion battery.

The ASUS U31SD-A1 received a final score of 3.5 out of 5 stars from Notebook Review. You can check out the full review here, included in the full review are benchmark scores and direct comparisons with other similar machines.

Land Rover LR4 Review

The 2011 Land Rover LR4 ranks 14 out of 18 Luxury Midsize SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 12 published reviews and test drives of the Land Rover LR4, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The 2011 Land Rover LR4 is for families who need plenty of passenger and cargo space, as well as almost unstoppable off-roading abilities. However, a high base price and poor fuel economy comes with all that capability.

The Land Rover LR4 deviates from the pattern followed by most luxury midsize SUVs. It’s not a car-based crossover, tuned for good fuel economy and comfortable cruising. Rather, the 2011 LR4 is a true SUV, capable of fording streams, crawling over rocks and keeping its owners moving, no matter what Mother Nature throws at it. While reviewers say it’s tough to beat the LR4 when the road ends, they also say that as a family SUV, it makes a good case for itself. The LR4 can seat up to seven with an optional third row that reviewers say can actually seat adults. The interior has high-end materials and optional high-tech features, like a rear-seat DVD system and a beverage cooler, making it an excellent family SUV.

Used to Volkswagen Golf 1.4 TSI

All of which means there’s a genuine big car feel about the Golf MkVI. The diesels will be the most popular over here, but don’t rule out the petrols – the 1.4TSI 160 is a nice halfway house to the GTI, and the 1.4 TSI 122 is fine if your annual mileage isn’t huge. Don’t be fooled by the TSI badge of the latter, as there isn’t a trick turbo and supercharged arrangement. It’s just a turbo here, which is so smooth that you really can’t feel it boosting pressure. Which is another way of saying that its effect is virtually unnoticeable – low down in the revs there’s not much torque, but equally up high there’s not an abundance of poke. This sounds like faint praise, until you remember that the old 1.6-litre FSI engine was far rougher and much less economical (45.6mpg versus 42.2mpg). Equally, it was hardly the last word in pace. The diesel is still far better on the current car, but this petrol brings it closer than it was. Most has reviewed the Golf TSI before here and I have brought the Golf back out to play once more, for a comparison shoot-out between the Scirocco TSI and Polo GTI; all of which employs the same 1.4 twincharged mill. The EA111 engine is an award winning engine for good reason – direct injection, supercharged and turbocharged, squeezing 160PS @ 5,800rpm and 240Nm @ 1,500-4,500rpm from a tiny 1,390cc block. These figures are enough to rival many other naturally aspirated 2.0-litre engines in the market. As can be expected – suspension in the Golf is more tuned for comfort, soaking up all pimples on the road effortlessly. There is a lightness to the rear though, and whilst this can lead to some hairy moments when taking corners too fast, once you’ve understood the limits of the car, the Golf ends up being very rewarding to drive. Another thing you have to keep in mind are the brakes – the ones in the Golf do not perform the same way as the ones in the Scirocco. Brake pedals felt spongy, and your feet travels a little further towards the floor before any stopping happens. I’ve driven both the mk5 and mk6 Golf GTI, and they both had similar issues, so I’m left wondering if this is simply just a Golf trademark.

The new SLK 250 BlueEFFICIENCY can be upgraded at Brabus in two stages. The Brabus ECO PowerXtra B25 CGI module bumps power output of the four-cylinder direct-injection engine from standard 204 hp (201 bhp) / 150 kW to 230 hp (226 bhp) / 169 kW at just 5,500 rpm.

Another ten additional horsepower can be realized with the supplementary installation of a larger intercooler and an electronically controlled Brabus sport wastegate valve that are part of the Brabus ECO PowerXtra B25S CGI performance kit. 240 hp (236 bhp) / 176 kW of power and 370 Nm (273 lb-ft) of torque in overboost mode accelerate the two-seater in 6.2 seconds from rest to 100 km/h on the way to a top speed of 248 km/h (154 mph).

The installation of the Brabus stainless-steel sport exhaust system is advantageous not only for tuned engines. Its four tailpipes featuring the typical Brabus design not only give the roadster an even more exclusive appearance but also produce an even sportier exhaust note for all engine variants.

SUBARU DEBUTS ALL-NEW 36-MPG

SUBARU DEBUTS ALL-NEW 36-MPG AT NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW
  • 30-Percent Boost In Fuel Economy Makes 2012 Impreza the Most Fuel Efficient All-Wheel Drive Car in America.
  • Roomiest Impreza Ever With New Level of Comfort and Refinement
  • Same exterior dimensions, but lighter and quicker than previous model
Subaru Impreza 2012 SUBARU DEBUTS ALL NEW 36 MPG 2012 IMPREZA

NEW YORK, – Subaru of America, Inc., today introduced the all-new fourth-generation 2012 Impreza® four-door and five-door compact models at the 2011 New York International Auto Show. Debuting bolder, more dynamic designs and an all-new powertrain, the 2012 Impreza models offer a 30-percent improvement in fuel economy over the outgoing versions, along with increased room, greater agility and a higher level of refinement. New amenities, infotainment technology and higher-grade interior materials contribute to a more rewarding driving and ownership experience in the 2012 Impreza, which will arrive in Subaru dealerships this fall.

Powered by an all-new 148-hp 2.0-liter Boxer engine, the 2012 Impreza comes with a choice of a five-speed manual transmission or the second-generation Lineartronic® CVT (continuously variable transmission). The 2012 Impreza will offer the highest fuel economy of any all-wheel drive car in America, with projected EPA ratings of 27 mpg city and 36 mpg highway. Every 2012 Impreza is equipped as standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.

Offered in base, Premium, Sport Premium, Limited and Sport Limited models, the 2012 Impreza conveys a bolder, more confident design that emphasizes its sporty roots and standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive performance. In profile, the 2012 Impreza draws focus to its wheels with powerful arches, a theme that debuted on the 2010 Subaru Legacy®.

The combination of a longer wheelbase and redesigned door and roof trim and front seats yields gains in passenger and cargo room for the 2011 Impreza. The wheelbase grows to 104.1 inches compared to 103.2 in the outgoing model. Vehicle length and width remain the same as before for both sedan and five-door models, yet, thanks to redesigned door panels, the 2012 Impreza offers increased hip and shoulder room. Rear seat passengers gain nearly two inches of legroom. Sedan trunk room and five-door cargo room are both increased, and the five-door now provides a completely flat load floor with the standard 60/40 split rear seatbacks folded.
Subaru Impreza 2012 5 SUBARU DEBUTS ALL NEW 36 MPG 2012 IMPREZA

Subaru Impreza 2012 6 SUBARU DEBUTS ALL NEW 36 MPG 2012 IMPREZA
The windshield is more raked than in the previous Impreza, with the bottom of the A-pillar moved 7.9 inches forward, allowing for a front door opening nearly five inches longer for easier entry/exit. Higher hip points and a lower, flatter instrument panel, along with larger side mirrors, contribute to better visibility from within the cabin.

Richer looking appointments and details abound, including soft-touch materials for the dashboard, door trim and center console armrest. Larger door pockets can hold plastic drink bottles and large maps. Numerous compartments located in and around the center console hold all manner of today’s personal items, such as phones, USB drives and MP3 players.

The new 2.0-liter Boxer engine feels even more responsive than the 2.5-liter engine it replaces, thanks to lighter vehicle weight – and especially when equipped with the new CVT, a quieter and more compact version of the CVT that debuted in the 2010 Legacy and Outback® models. Unlike a conventional automatic transmission, which uses fixed gear ratios, a CVT provides infinite variability between the highest and lowest available ratios with no discernable steps or shifts. The CVT continuously and smoothly adapts to performance demand, helping to keep the engine in its most efficient operating range. Impreza Premium, Sport and Limited models with the CVT also feature a 6-speed manual mode with steering wheel paddle shifters, which allow the driver to control the transmission via six pre-set ratios.

Other technologies helping boost fuel efficiency in the 2011 Subaru Impreza include the new electric power steering system, which by itself contributes a 2-percent efficiency increase, and lower rolling resistance tires.

Strengthened suspension components in front and rear — some inherited from the Legacy — enhance agility, while new liquid (hydraulic) engine mounts help to damp out vibration. The double-wishbone rear suspension features new, strengthened components and pillow ball bushings for improved ride, straight-line stability, handling and vehicle response.

Building on Subaru’s renown for safety (all 2011 Subaru model lines are IIHS “Top Safety Picks”), the 2012 Impreza was designed to excel under the new, more stringent NHTSA testing regimen. The new body structure makes greater use of high-tensile strength steel and features special stiffening elements at key locations. All 2012 Impreza models add a new driver’s knee airbag to the roster of safety features. The passenger-seat front airbag, features a shell-type design with a center groove, thus exposing the passenger to less impact force upon deployment.

All Impreza models for 2012 are equipped as standard with Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), which combines stability and traction control functions. Likewise, all 2012 Impreza models are equipped with a standard 4-wheel disc Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and the Brake Assist safety system.

Standard comfort and available amenities are increased across the Impreza line for 2012. The base model features a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, power windows, door locks and side mirrors, a 60/40-split fold-down rear seat, outside temperature gauge, a multi-function display with fuel economy information, remote keyless entry system, security system with engine immobilizer, tilt/telescopic steering wheel, variable intermittent windshield wipers and a low windshield washer fluid warning light. Even carpeted floormats, often an option in many cars, are standard equipment in all 2012 Impreza models.

Impreza Premium models add 16-inch alloy wheels, steering wheel audio and Bluetooth® control switches, a rear stabilizer bar for crisper handling, adjustable console armrest, body-color exterior mirrors and chrome interior door handles. The standard audio system in the Premium models features Bluetooth® hands-free phone connectivity and audio streaming, Radio Data Broadcast System (RDBS), iPod® control capability, USB port, 3.5mm aux. input jack and six speakers. An optional All-Weather Package adds heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors and a windshield wiper de-icer.

A power moonroof and a navigation system are available for the Premium models. The new navigation system includes a 6.1-inch touch screen LCD display, voice control, iTunes® tagging, SMS text messaging capability, XM® Satellite Radio and XM NavTraffic (both XM services require subscriptions). Updated map data can be downloaded to a personal computer and then transferred into the system via secure digital (SD) card.

The Impreza Sport Premium is a five-door model that combines standard 17-inch alloy wheels and the All-Weather Package with fog lights, roof rails, unique seat fabric and rocker panel spoilers.

Topping the 2012 Impreza range, the Limited and Sport Limited (five-door only) models deliver the highest level of comfort and convenience ever offered in an Impreza. Leather seating, the All-Weather Package and Alloy Wheel Package are standard. A further audio upgrade (above the Premium) features a 4.3-inch display screen and standard HD Radio. The navigation system and power moonroof are options.

Honda Civic Hybrid Review

As the price of fuel tries to take up permanent residence north of a dollar a litre, everyone is starting to look seriously at minimizing their future fuel costs and hybrid vehicles are making starting to make financial, as well as environmental sense.

Hybrid technology; where the best of electric and internal combustion technology are combined; is the way of the immediate future as it milks the best out of two technologies. The fuel miser recipe is to take a 1.3-liter 4-cylinder Ultra Low Emission internal combustion engine, because of its better mid-range power. Combine it with an ultra-thin electric motor; for its low speed torque and its ability to also generate power back into the batteries as it slows the vehicle. Blend well, using a constantly variable transmission and a computer system to manage the relationship and you have a vehicle that will fit most tastes.

However up until now the general motoring public has been slow to be embraced this technology, mainly because of the expense and compromise to creature comforts but the Honda Civic hybrid could reverse this trend.

First, the price wont scare you as it is only $3,000 dearer than the garden variety Honda Civic and when you hop into it is almost exactly the same, so the technology wont scare you. The only hint that you are in something different is a small gauge in the dash that tells you when the hybrid system is delivering power back into the batteries.

Honda Civic is quiet, especially when stationary as the petrol engine turns itself off, to be instantly started again by the electric motor when you push the accelerator. But I must say that waiting to turn at a busy Adelaide intersection, in an vehicle that does not having an engine running, does challenge your trust in the technology. However it works and a large part of the fuel savings come from not wasting petrol idling when it is not needed.

The Civic Hybrid cannot be used as an electric vehicle like the Toyota Prius as the 10kW electric motor is only there to the assist the 69kW petrol engine at times when it needs more power.

Because the fuel consumption difference between the Honda Civic Hybrid and the conventional Civic GLi is 2.3 liters per 100kms and the Hybrid is $3,000 dearer, it will take about 6 to 8 years of fuel cost saving to pay for the difference. Obviously it will be much shorter if you travel more kilometers than the average driver. On road test we achieved 7 liters per 100 kms, which is far short of the 5.2 claimed by Honda, but still very good.

The Nickel – Metal – Hydride battery has a life of around 10 years or 200,000 kms and a replacement will about $1,980.

On the road Civic Hybrid rode well, behaving and performing very much like a normal Civic. It is well equipped with safety equipment having dual stage, front air bags as well as side air bags. The system also has occupant sensors to only deploy the airbag when it is safe to do so.

Unlike its predecessors there is reasonable storage space in the boot as battery sits behind the rear seat.
The Honda Civic Hybrid is the beginning of a new generation of affordable and responsible vehicles that will progressively become the norm.

Ferrari Four FF Specifications

The FF is a four seater GT, with a long sloping bonnet where a 6.3-litre V12 is nestled. I must admit that when I first saw pictures of the FF, I hated it. I didn’t like every thing about it visually; too long, too sloped, awkward face, clumsy rear. But then when I finally saw it in the flesh, my opinion changed a little… it was smaller in the flesh, lines were cleaner, and the rear isn’t actually that bad. In fact, the more I look at it, the more it looks more like a station wagon version of the 458 Italia! That said, I am sure that many will be divided by it’s looks. The FF is a strict four-seater, with a very generous boot space of 450 litres. To put things in perspective, a Honda Civic FD has 458 litres of space. The cherry on this cake is knowing that the rear seats are actually collapsible, and the boot space is extended to 800 litres. Definitely more than above average to um, do your grocery runs.

Most of the interior is wrapped in a sumptuous leather, with smattering of CF here and there. Extended all the way, the driving position is perfect, but passengers at the rear would suffer, and leg-room isn’t what you would call generous.

The steering is standard Ferrari fare, as are the dials (that are beautiful, btw). More important to note, is the optional display on the front passenger area; information on the FF’s cruising speed is on show here, and some might tick this box, just to scare some of their passengers. Also worth mentioning are the redesigned air-cond vents. These are actually much easier to use now, and doesn’t feel as cheap as some of the earlier Ferrari models.

The FF’s 6.3 litre V12 is naturally aspirated, and produces a staggering 651hp, with 683Nm of torque (500Nm @ 1000rpm). All this, in a body that weighs only 1800kg. 0-100km/h sprint is dispatched in a scant 3.7secs and Ferrari claims that the FF is the fastest four-seat automobile in the world. And I can believe that.

The engine is couple to a 7-speed dual-clutch tranny that is similar to the 458 Italia. The 4RM (four wheel drive) system is also touted to be 50% lighter than a conventional 4WD system, and Ferrari claims that this system is much more usable than the 612 it replaces, especially so in hazardous driving conditions like heavy rain, or snow.

SPECIFICATIONS:
6.3 litre V12
Max power: 651hp @ 8000rpm
Max torque: 683Nm @ 6000rpm
0-100km/h: 3.7secs
Top speed: 335km/h
Transmission: 7-speed semi-auto, AWD
